Although customs vary from country to country, and from culture to culture, the exchange of rings has been an integral part of wedding ceremonies since ancient times.
Wedding Rings in the Past
In the past, however, the wedding rings served a different purpose. Wedding rings originated as an exchange of assets between two families. It was a symbol of financial safekeeping between a man and a woman, and only women received them. (The tradition of both partners exchanging rings is a relatively recent one, which fully took force by the early to mid 20th century.) After the bride received her ring, the groom would also hand over money as another symbol of financial security. Rings and Vows...
The next step that occurs after the exchange of rings is the vows, usually performed by a religious official, judge or ordained minister. Traditionally, vows are either very straightforward and to the point, or moderately to very sentimental. Some vows are religious or spiritually oriented with the officiant reading marriage-related passages from religious texts and speaking about religious topics. Sometimes, the bride and groom like to integrate elements of humor and sometimes funny little accidents occur, like breaking into laughter or messing up the vow text because of nervousness.
